Sleep Apnea Testing and Care in Inwood, NY

Sleep apnea means your breathing stops and starts again and again while you sleep. Loud snoring and daytime sleepiness are common signs, and many people do not know they have it. We offer in-lab and home sleep studies, and our Woodmere Sleep Center has Saturday night studies available.

Symptoms we evaluate

Untreated sleep apnea is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, so it is worth checking. Signs include:

  • Loud snoring, or pauses in breathing that someone else notices
  • Waking up gasping or choking
  • Feeling tired during the day, even after a full night in bed
  • Dozing off while reading, watching TV or driving
  • Morning headaches
  • Trouble concentrating, or feeling irritable
  • Waking often at night to use the bathroom

How we test for sleep apnea

In-lab studies are done at our Woodmere Sleep Center, a full-service sleep lab with comfortable rooms and cable TV. We go over the results with you at a follow-up visit. Read about each test on our Tests We Do page.

  • In-lab sleep study (polysomnography): you sleep overnight in the lab, arriving around 9pm and leaving around 6am, while a technician monitors your brain waves and breathing all night.
  • CPAP study: a night in the lab wearing a CPAP mask while the technician adjusts the air pressure to keep your breathing steady.
  • Split-night study: both in one night, with the first part looking for sleep apnea and, if it is found, CPAP fitted and adjusted for the rest of the night.
  • Home sleep study: a simpler test you do in your own bed. Some insurance plans require it before an in-lab study.

Your care plan

Once your results are in, we explain what they show and talk through your options. If CPAP is recommended, the CPAP study helps find the pressure setting that works for you. Treatment depends on how severe the apnea is and what fits your life, and we keep your primary doctor informed.

We also evaluate other sleep problems, including insomnia, restless legs, unusual movements during sleep, narcolepsy and hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness).

When to ask about a sleep study

Drowsy driving is dangerous, so do not drive when you feel sleepy. Ask us about a sleep study if:

  • Someone tells you that you snore loudly or stop breathing in your sleep
  • You feel sleepy during the day, even after a full night in bed
  • You have nodded off while driving or at work
  • You snore and have high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes or a past stroke
  • Your doctor has suggested a sleep study
  • You have trouble falling or staying asleep, or restless legs at night

Insurance

We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Some plans require a home sleep study first, so please see the plans we take or call us to check your coverage.
